But due to our tight travel schedule, — we had only one day in Hanoi after the Halong Bay cruise before flying out to Hong Kong \u2014 we had to settle for a 1-night cruise. Still, it turned out to be an unforgettable, if brief, glimpse into the stunning seascape of Ha Long Bay.<\/p>

1. Pickup from Hanoi Old Quarter: Not as Simple as It Sounds<\/h3>

We booked our cruise through a company that stayed in touch via WhatsApp days before departure, sharing pickup details and reminders. This simple gesture was surprisingly reassuring.<\/p>

On the day of departure, however, we were told,<\/p>

\u201cOur bus can\u2019t reach your hotel \u2014 please walk to the main road.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

I hadn\u2019t imagined a massive coach would need such space, so we carried our luggage out for about 5 minutes. Thankfully, a kind tour guide showed up right at our hotel to help with our bags \u2014 a small but memorable act of service that softened the stress.<\/p>

\ud83d\udccc Pickup Tips<\/strong><\/p>

  • Budget cruises may not include pickup \u2014 check in advance.<\/li>\n\n
  • Pick up and Drop off are included in most of the cruises<\/li>\n\n
  • Large buses can\u2019t access narrow Old Quarter alleys. Be ready to meet on a main road.<\/li>\n\n
  • If you have heavy luggage, ask if your hotel offers storage or assistance.<\/li>\n\n
  • Install WhatsApp when you get any country in Southeast Asia. Everyone uses it.<\/li><\/ul>

    2. Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: A 3-Hour Drive with One Rest Stop<\/h3>

    When I was googling to find out the actual drive time from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, there were son many confused informations. Some said it takes 3 hours, some said 1.5 hours or 2 hours. It turned out those times depended on what kind of transportations they used. If it is a taxi or rental car drive, it could be done by 1.5 hours. If there is a town-town bus, it could be 2-2.5 hours. But for the cruise pick up, the drive to Ha Long Bay took 3 full hours, including a 30-minute break at a rest area. When you come back, it is exactly same. <\/p>

    During the bathroom break, you can go to the restroom, have some snacks and coffee in the 2nd floor. Also they sell some souvenirs including embroidered art works. Watching young women embroider intricate designs was unexpectedly moving. These tiny windows into local life are what make travel feel real.<\/p>

    When we finally reached the port, bags were sorted by cruise line and guests waited at tables until called. Once your boat is ready, you will be called then you board on a small boat to go to your cruise boat. For an exception, we saw a big cruise boat embarked right at the dock and guests just went on to the cruise boat directly. <\/p>

    For our cruise, a quick 30-second boat ride brought us to our main cruise ship \u2014 and everyone chuckled at how short it was. One of those universal travel moments.<\/p>

    3. 1 Night or 2? The Cruise Dilemma<\/h3>

    To be honest, the ship felt older than expected. We had booked a cabin without a balcony, and the space felt quite cramped. While the crew was kind and the food good, the room quality left us wishing we\u2019d splurged a bit more.<\/p>

    If I return, I\u2019ll definitely go for a 2-night cruise \u2014 with a balcony in a newer boat.
    Picture this: watching the sunset over calm waters, book in hand and wine nearby. Worth it.<\/p>

    • 2-night cruises offer slower-paced schedules and real relaxation.<\/li>\n\n
    • Room quality matters!
      • $300+ per person: renovated or newer ships, balconies, spacious cabins.<\/li>\n\n
      • Below $270 for 2 people: older interiors, no balconies, smaller cabins.<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n\n
      • Always read detailed reviews and photos \u2014 don\u2019t rely on booking site images alone.<\/li><\/ul>

        4. Bonus Tips from Fellow Travelers<\/h3>

        When we came back to Hanoi after Hal Long Bay, we met a traveler who visited Ha Long Bay as a day trip.<\/p>

        \u201cHonestly, skip the budget overnight cruises. Stay near the bay and just book a same-day cruise.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

        Surprisingly practical!<\/p>

        \ud83d\udef3\ufe0f Alternative Option<\/strong><\/p>

        • You can do a day trip for Halong Bay. There are many day cruises.<\/li>\n\n
        • You can book a hotel near Ha Long Bay if you want to spend more days. Then do a day cruise every day.<\/li>\n\n
        • Cruise booking booths are easy to find in Hanoi\u2019s Old Quarter.<\/li><\/ul>

          And one last thing \u2014 bring your own water? When I researched, many people said the price of water and beverages is extremely high.
          Actually, bottled water was included from the pickup bus to the cruise, and also the drop off bus. But alcohol?
          A couple we met paid over $160 for some cocktails. Be warned!<\/p>

          Final Thoughts<\/h3>

          Our 1-night Ha Long Bay cruise was a mix of joy and mild regret.
          The scenery? Magical.
          The timing? Too short.
          But being there \u2014 where my daughter had once stood, and sharing this moment with my husband \u2014 made it all worthwhile.<\/p>
